Upload failed? A beginner checklist

Work through these in order:

1. Cable: try another USB cable. Many cables only charge.
2. Port: check a port appears (Windows: Device Manager; Mac/Linux: run ls /dev/tty* before and after plugging in).
3. Download mode: hold the BOOT button, press reset (or unplug and replug), then let go of BOOT. Try uploading again.
4. Board choice: make sure the board selected in the IDE matches your board.
5. Still stuck? Post your board name, what you tried, and the full error text. Copy and paste it; a screenshot is fine too.

Expected result: the upload reaches 100% and the board restarts.
