Short answer: for most beginners, any common ESP32 development board with a USB port is a good first board.
A few words you will see:
- Microcontroller (MCU): a tiny computer on one chip that runs one program.
- Development board: the chip on a small board with USB, buttons and pins, ready to plug in.
How the three common ESP32 types differ:
- ESP32-C3: Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 5 (LE). Simple, good for small sensor projects.
- ESP32-S3: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE), two processor cores, and a USB port that can act as a keyboard or mouse. Good for camera or AI projects.
- ESP32-C6: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 (LE), plus Thread/Zigbee for smart-home devices.
Common mistake: buying the fanciest board first. Start simple, and buy a second board later when you know what you need.
